Food Labels Explained

I'm sure we've all stared at the back of a package of food and thought, "what the heck does some of this mean?"

Well have no fear. We will help you understand the ins and outs of a typical food label!

First, we are often met with confusion when we say "net carbs."

Here is how we get net carbs from the food label information:

So the example to the right shows this food has a total carb count of 15g, and dietary fiber of 10g. So we simply take the 15g of total carbs and deduct the dietary fiber to get to a total of 5g of net carbohydrate... That's simple, Right?!

Total Carbohydrate = 15g

Dietary Fiber           = 10g

 Net Carbohydrate  = 5g

To the right is another label from a food we use a fair amount. Lily's chocolate chips! This label is a touch more complicated than the last but still pretty easy.

So we have a total carbohydrate of 9 grams with 4g of Dietary Fiber and 3g of Erythritol. Since Erythritol doesn't spike insulin we can deduct those grams from the total carbs to get to our "Net Carb" content.

Total Carbs=    9G

Dietary Fiber= 4g

Erythritol =       3g

NET CARB=    2g
